While serious business is a part of the National Convention, it is also a time to renew old friendships and make new ones – and take some time for fun and relaxation in a beautiful city where history abounds.

Historic Williamsburg has enough interesting things to see and do that making this a family vacation would be a fabulous idea.  Colonial Williamsburg is the nation’s largest living history museum, a replica of the site where John Smith and company established the first permanent English colony, complete with period dress and re-enactors living the old-time life.  Often called America’s Historic Triangle, it’s an easy trip from Williamsburg to Yorktown Battlefield, Yorktown Victory Center and Historic Yorktown.  Learn about the Revolutionary War era and have fun doing it.

Williamsburg is also home to Busch Gardens, a 350 acre European-themed park with world-class roller coasters, fun rides, children’s attractions, animal shows and live entertainment.  Visit the site of the first official Thanksgiving in 1619 at Berkeley Plantation and learn that Taps was composed here in 1862 at the Civil War Headquarters of General McClellan.  Historic Yorktown, 15 minutes away, is most remembered as the site of the pivotal victory in the American Revolutionary War.  In Historic Jamestown you can walk in the footsteps of Captain John Smith, Pocahontas, and the men and women who settled England’s first permanent colony in North America in 1607.

Don’t stop there – you can also visit the Mariners’ Museum, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!, Water Country Park, Botanical Garden, Williamsburg Winery and if you’re really adventurous, go sailing aboard the 105 foot Schooner Alliance.  William and Mary College is located in Williamsburg, along with many options for golfing, shopping and dining.

Of course, we hope your main objective will be to attend the National Convention’s Delegate Reception on Friday evening and the convention sessions from 9:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.  The hotel is offering AMRA’s convention rate for 3 days prior and 3 days past our convention so you will have plenty of time to spend with the family, enjoy all that the area offers, and still make the convention meetings.
